Don LaFontaine has died. You may not know his name, and you may not know what he looked like, but you'll almost certainly recognise what he sounded like. He did many cinema trailers (and ads, no doubt) in his distinctive baritone rumble, has been parodied endlessly, and you'll know him for his "In a world where..." phrase.

I went and saw Dark Knight a couple of nights ago. I liked it a lot, but that's par for the course, because I seem to lack critical thinking when it comes to all but the most dire comic book movies. However, a really good indicator of the movie's quality is that I managed to convince my brother to come along and see it, even though he's not much of a comic book movie fan. (He didn't even like Iron Man, for example.)

After the movie, he said it was definitely a very good movie and he liked it.

The Joker was suitably homicidally insane and unhinged, and depicted amazingly well by Heath Ledger. I also noted that the Joker's 'multiple choice background' seemed to have made it into the movie as well.

We did not believe in Harvey Dent )

Jul. 7th, 2008 @ 12:57 pm Relevance; Internet again; the Pandas, they are a kung-fu fighting; and ninjas that flip out. 2!
I keep on writing partial entries and unfinished paragraphs of half-formed thoughts and yet never get around to posting anything. My mental discipline and Writer-Fu are weak.

Sometimes I wonder - why write a blog/livejournal at all? I think that it comes down to history - I've had an online presence and a webpage for 12 years, and having no webpage / online presence would be strange and jarring. Yet, most of the things that I used to do online have fallen by the wayside. The old GRIT ended, taking my involvement with it. The Impro fiction sites have mostly died, taking my involvement with them. I have written almost nothing and drawn almost nothing, making my webpage nothing more than an old decaying repository of my stuff from several years ago.

And I won't talk about the email, except to say that I won't talk about it.

About all that is left of my online presence these days is this Livejournal and my WoW/CoH accounts. If they go, well... I don't know what would happen.

Except, perhaps, I do. There have been a couple of recent times where I've barely touched LJ or WoW/CoH. I practically became a hermit. With my various social hangups, it is very very easy for me to be a hermit. Not of the wise/mystical kind of days of yore, but rather more of the hikikomori kind.

No, I haven't stopped being such a hermit. I'm just trying, once again, to get out of my shell.

---

And now on to the quick updates on various topics of the (not at all a) spectacle that is the Life of Steven.

---

I finally did something about the lack of a decent internet connection at home. Browsing the internet via the Wii was nothing more than a stopgap measure. No keyboard, a not completely functional browser, and using the TV screen instead of a higher-resolution computer monitor became a pain the arse after a while.

So this past weekend I finally got a new router/ADSL2+ wireless/4 port modem (Netgear, and I can't even remember the model number anymore) and got it set up on Saturday morning without too much fuss. I was really worried about how much faffing about would be required to get it working - my Hardware-Fu has really deteriorated. But there was no trouble at all, and now - a stable internet connection! That isn't flaking out every ten seconds or dying completely, like it used to!

This also means I can finally get on WoW and CoH again, after about four months of next to no activity. I foresee that they're going to suck up vast reserves of my time again, at least in the short term.

---

I went and saw Kung Fu Panda on the weekend. I was all set to ignore this movie - the last Dreamworks movie I saw was Shrek 3, and that was extremely forgettable. I was sure that Kung Fu Panda was going to be awful as well.

And then the positive reviews started coming in. And I'm a martial arts fan. Plus I had a movie gift card that needed using. So I decided to go see it after all.

You could say that it is essentially a martial arts movie with a fairly typical and cliche-ridden plot. (There I go, being negative again.) You could also say that it rocked and was filled with awesomeness. The voices are well done (without being drowned in celebrity) and the action scenes are great fun, and there are even some moments where they play with convention and expectation really well.

Especially the bit where Po's father says he has a secret to tell Po. Po being a panda, his father being a goose, and the villain being a foundling, you expect to find out that Po is also a foundling and get some dramatic parallelism going. Nope. The secret turns out to be something else entirely.

The movie is full of little things like that, that make you laugh. Such as Po having to imagine that the Maguffin of Power is really a cookie, so that he's motivated enough to dash up a wall to get it. Or the food training, where Shifu discovers how to properly motivate Po in his Kung Fu training, and Po becoming as awesome as he always dreamed of being.

About the only thing that really bugged me about the movie (I didn't really mind the formulaic story) was Shifu's name. Because, if I remember right, Shifu means "master". So they're all calling him "Master Master."

Very big props go to the depiction of little Tai Lung. He was just so adorably cute and eager... which makes his fall so much more wrenching.

And I love what the secret of the Dragon Scroll means for the final showdown between Po and Tai Lung.

---

I finally finished Ninja Gaiden 2. Overall impression, great fun, but not quite as great as the first game.

5 bosses in quick succession at the end of the game? Yeargh. Mind you, I didn't mind the Genshin fight or the Archfiend fights all that much, once I learnt the fights. Elizebet and Draga Dai can go die in a fire though.

Overall, I like the game. There were just all these bits when playing it when I was swearing like a sailor at how ridiculous the game was getting. Soldiers with cluster rocket launchers? At opposite ends of a tunnel? OW

One of my favourite bits is the cutscene in chapter 11 where Muramasa shows up and shows off his l33t sword skillz. Not bad for an old man pushing 100.

It's thoroughly belated, but happy 4th of July to all the USAians reading this, commiserations on the 'holy crap we just lost our American Colony' day to the UKians, and happy "it's just another Friday" to everybody else.

May. 28th, 2008 @ 08:57 am Indiana Jones and the Incredibly Long Subtitle
Tags:
Indiana Jones and the Incredibly Long Subtitle is my official name for the latest Indy flick. Except, "and the Raiders of the Lost Ark" is just as long and unwieldy as "and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull." So the usefulness of "and the Incredibly Long Subtitle" is very limited, but it's stuck now.

The movie itself was Big Dumb Fun, but also a bit meh. It seemed to do everything right (except perhaps the mythos they were working with) but still... meh. It doesn't quite have the magic of the earlier films.

Harrison Ford was cringe-worthy wooden at times.

I only spotted one shout out to Raiders of the Lost Ark, apart from the two obvious ones.

Overall - good fun, better than most, but because this is an Indy movie it wasn't as good as it should have been.

Iron Man:
A good fun superhero movie, with many Moments of Awesome (the first flight definitely being one of them). And, even though I'm not that familiar with the comic, I noticed a few fun shout outs to the comic, such as the Mark 1 armor and Tony's constant tinkering with the armor.
There are some absolute howlers when it comes to the physics and technobabble, with "three gigajoules per second" being one of the more egregious.

Jade Empire:
It took me awhile but I finally started on Bioware's martial arts RPG. The combat gets a bit samey after a while, and the staff (the weapon I chose) seems pretty pathetic. And, just as I remember the reviews stating, the path of the Closed Fist is just generally "I am evil" comments in conversation. Overall, it's OK, but it gets annoying after long sessions of play.

Super Metroid:
The possibility of eventually being able to download and emulate a legal version of Super Metroid is one of the reasons I got a Wii in the first place. I finally actually downloaded it this weekend and started playing through.
I'm having the typical reaction I have when I play a retro game - it just feels so *old* and old-fashioned. Despite that, it is still awesome.

EDIT: AUGH I did not stick around to the end of Iron Man and it seems I really should have. Augh augh augh.

Yes, I have been away from LJ for a long while.

Yes, there is a reason for this.

No, it's not something I'm mentioning on LJ. Sorry!

Various quick thoughts from the past several weeks:

---

I finally saw Cars. Very fun, and I enjoyed it immensely.

---

I finally saw all of the anime series Zero no Tsukaima. While it has some interesting ideas, the execution is flawed, and the storytelling is bland and very predictable.

---

I really really didn't like Death Note. It is, basically, teenaged neo-gothic angst poetry - that then comes true! No wonder it's so popular.

Then, fairly recently, I skipped episodes 13-16 and saw episodes 17-20. From what I understand, Light and Misa gave away their Death Notes and lost all memories of them. Now Light is not the immensely bored student from the first episode, or the homicidal maniac he quickly became after getting the Death Note. Instead, he has a goal, is not bored, and is a very smart and nice guy. (He's almost *too* nice.)

It's nice to see that he's not completely a homicidal maniac jerk. As the saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely" - and what is the Death Note if not absolute power?

I now find the series a bit more interesting. The problem is, I already know how it ends. I'm not sure if I'm interested enough to stick around and see all sorts of stupid things happen. )

---

About a month ago I finally got my druid in World of Warcraft to level 70. After a bit of desultory flailing about with my other characters, I found all the other classes a bit lacking when compared to the druid. After all, the druid can do it all (sort of). I am back to the druid and trying to get the 5200 gold I need for a very fast flying mount. I'm at 2800 gold and counting.

---

In less anime and game related news... My baby brother is getting married in less than two weeks. This is a very scary thought. He's six years and a half younger than I am, and getting married.

For the wedding, I pulled out my suit, which I haven't worn in ages. Thankfully, it meets my brother's approval. Also, it fits, thank god, though I could still stand to lose some weight.

Kung Fu Hustle is finally out here. I went and saw it last night, and found it very funny. It doesn't try to be anything other than absurdist martial-arts comedy, and it does that very well.

I think one of my favourite parts was the Matrix spoof at the end, along with the line spoken by the landlords as it's starting - "Do you think he's the Chosen One?"

You know, just when I make a post about my PC being A-OK, some fault developed on my phone line. This meant I could make no phone calls (well, at least no phone calls that didn't cost an arm and a leg) and could not connect to the internet. This was a travesty; a dire infraction of my rights as a human being, or at the very least, a severe inconvenience. Well, not even that, but it was annoying, and I dropped off the face of the internet. Again. Which I suppose is not all that surprising, really.

At least the PC was still OK.

---

Finally finished Metroid Prime 2: Echoes. I almost didn't. I'd made it to the second-to-last boss, and was having extreme difficulty with him, getting absolutely nowhere. "He's supposed to be hard," I kept on reminding myself, "he's supposed to be hard." But he was being seriously annoying.

The rest of the game had been... well, not exactly *easy* (I died plenty of times), but manageable. But this penultimate boss was reminiscent of the difficulty levels in Ninja Gaiden. And to top it all off, I had to wrestle with the controls just to get an idea of what the hell was going on. (Trying to control a first-person shooter with a console gamepad was not helping, either.)

Finally, after getting my arse kicked for the umpteenth time, I put the game back on the shelf, swearing blind that I'd had enough and was going to give up.

For some crazy reason (let's call it masochism), I took it off the shelf the next day and attempted the second-last boss again. Somehow, I actually managed to defeat him. I don't know HOW it happened. I remember looking at his life bar, seeing it was down to 25%, and wondering how on earth I'd managed to do that much damage. Suddenly, thinking I might have a chance, I started blasting him with renewed vigor, and before I knew it down he went.

Through an amazing stroke of luck, I then managed to defeat the very last boss. I had about 39 energy (out of 1499) left at the end of that battle.

I now felt much better about putting the game on the shelf and not touching it again. ^_^

---

The completion of Metroid Prime 2 doesn't mark the end of my unplayed games pile, but I'm getting close. Remaining are Grandia 2 (I'll so have to restart this, and hope that the Dreamcast still works), Panzer Dragoon Orta (have to restart this one, too, haven't played it in a year), Luigi's Mansion and most of the Resident Evil games for the Gamecube.

I'm wondering if I really want to bother with the RE games again. The few times I fired up the remake of the first RE game, I found myself getting very aggravated with the controls. However, I hate wasting money, and I would like to at least give them a shot.

---

So just recently at BAS (the anime club I go to), there was the "speaking Japanese incident", as I have started to call it.

Someone I knew was there ([info]knightessyamika), with a Japanese couple. (From what I understand, they're her calligraphy teachers.) Just a quick dropping-by, from what I could gather. We introduced ourselves, some in Japanese. I was encouraged to do so, though I was very embarassed and nervous about it - it has been many years since I last studied Japanese and actually *spoken* any. But in the end I gave a quick, strange, nerve-wracked, and somewhat stilted jikoshoukai (self-introduction).

It was kind of fun, speaking that much Japanese at once again, as horrible as it must have been.

I really must do something about this.

---

Have just had a couple weeks break. Yay for time off. I'm not sure I achieved very much, but I did some stuff regardless.

* Read Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince
* Completed Metroid Prime 2 at last
* Made a dent in my unwatched anime / unread manga / unread books pile. A small dent, but a dent nonetheless.
* Went to the coast to visit the parents. I always like going to their place, because it is far away from my PC and my consoles, which can suck up absolutely amazing amounts of time in seconds flat. I feel inspired to live a cleaner, healthier life, and to exercise more regularly, going for long walks / jogs through the Noosa National Park. (Then, of course, I go home again, and up extremely corrupted again.)
* Got some much-needed new pants. Rather incredibly, they are not, in fact, blue.
* Saw Bewitched, which was nowhere near as bad as I thought it was going to be.

And now, movies!

Mr and Mrs Smith, and Batman Begins )

There wasn't very much in the movie trailers that really grabbed my attention, only the one for The Island. The concept of a group of people being held in a fake world really grabbed my attention, and I wondered where the movie would go with it. Then the trailer devolved to car chases, things blowing up, and the Intrepid Heroes dangling over immense heights. I lost a bit of interest after that, but I might go see it.

There were also other trailers, of course, but I can barely remember what they were for. They were that uninspiring. The two I can remember were for for Stealth (as soon as they mentioned a fully AI fighter jet, I guessed it would be going rogue) and Monster-In-Law (I instantly wrote it off as a Jennifer Lopez chick-flick).

Oh, that's right, there was the Fantastic Four trailer as well. (Surprisingly, *not* tonight, when I saw Batman Begins.) To which I say, meh. Just based on the trailer, I imagine this will not be a huge step forwards for the superhero action movie genre. But still, it has Dr. Doom. That may help the movie a bit. Or it might not. The movie is likely to make him just a generic villain.

Last night saw a sudden last-minute mad dash to the cinema to meet up with Brother P and Brother R to go and see the Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie. Yay for spontanaiety!

And also, yay for the movie itself! I'd been hearing all sorts of negative comments about it, about how it didn't follow the book, or missed key jokes, or messed up key jokes, or missed This or added That. However, none of this bothered me. With an open mind, some Common Sense, and the knowledge that 90% of it had been written by Douglas Adams anyway, I went into the cinema.

To say I enjoyed the movie is a bit of an understatement. ^_^ While it might have not had every single line and gag from the book, it was still undeniably Hitch-Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy, with all its humour and absurdity.

Oh, and the POV gun was awesome.

Lots of random things

Weird dreamings...

I was playing some sort of 3-D shooting / giant-robot game, and one of my weapons was some sort of whip that I could use to catch explosive globes. One tactic that the game really emphasised was to somehow wrap a whole bunch of these globes around an opponent and then shoot them. Only, it was very very hard to control the whip. I was really struggling with the controls, attempting to use this tactic, and finally succeeded...

...and then the dream abruptly changed - the globes sort of stopped exploding, and suddenly it was a classroom environment, and the enemy had changed into a spider and then a banana (I am *not* making that up) and the teacher-figure started lecturing me about... something. I forget exactly, but I think it was about how that tactic, while it was really powerful, shouldn't be used. "Think about the poor big old banana," she said.

I woke up, thinking, "What the hell?"

I think my subconscious might be telling me I play too many games. To which I have to say, I *know*, dammit.

---

Still on the topic of games - I made a very big mistake recently, and reinstalled Neverwinter Nights.

All my time has suddenly disappeared into it. Argh. *Now* I remember why I uninstalled it.

Still, taking down an archdevil with naught but my BARE HANDS was fun.

---

In anticipation of a certain movie coming out shortly, I went and read the Star Wars III - Revenge of the Sith novelisation. I wasn't particularly worried about spoilers, because I'd been spoiled to most of it already. Figured I might as well go the whole hog.

I won't give any spoilers here. All I'll say is that if the movie lives up to even *half* of the promise of the book, then it'll be great to see.

Also, I'm pretty sure that the movie will be a very different beast. Just judging from the trailers that I've seen, there will be a lot less of the talking and political maneuvering, and a lot more action. But again, if the movie lives up to half of the promise of the book, then it'll still be good.

And besides, the emergence of Vader is something we've been waiting for for SIX YEARS, ever since we were presented with Jake Lloyd and told he would grow up to be James Earl Jones. Seeing that finally happen on the big screen has got to be worth the admission price.

---

Still on movies, I have yet to see the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy movie, though I meant to go see it this past weekend. Reviews I've seen suggest that it's solid but not great. I don't particularly mind. I shall definitely go and see this one, as soon as I can.

---

The past couple of weeks at work have been INSANE. First we had a slight reshuffle of things so that there were less people actively on the helpdesk - instead of three, now there are only two, me and coworker Michael. This was not so bad.

No, the bad thing was that on the same week of the official changeover, I was given a code release to perform. A release is normally a four-day process, and as it was the first one I've ever done it took longer than normal. Then it was complicated when some last-minute changes were required. And all the time, I was worrying about the helpdesk and how I wasn't able to work on it.

Cue the week after that, which started normally and then an emergency release was required. That took up one and a half of very hectic days, and again I had no time for the helpdesk. I swear, I ended up a nervous wreck after all that.

This week had better be NORMAL, otherwise... otherwise... well, I'd go insane. Or at least be driven to 2Xtreme! Aggaravation.

And now, a silly quiz result.
