Introduction (aka about this journal)
Hello and welcome. This is, fairly obviously, my online journal / blog / whathaveyou. Come, put up your metaphorical webtravelling shoes; won't you have a read for a while?

As of about mid-May I've been tagging all my entries in various categories; I have links to these just below.

Jan. 29th, 2009 @ 09:25 pm Return of the curse of the secound cousin of "I live!" MwahahaHAHA!
Once again I have been putting off updating Livejournal.

In matter of fact I have even been putting off reading LJ. I've been letting it fall by the wayside. Is it because I've had this LJ around for so long? Am I getting bored of it?

Anyway, a bunch of miscellaneous thoughts from the past few months:

* In the final showing of BAS for 2008, I saw three anime downer endings, in rapid succession. First was Tower of Druaga, which was great fun up until the last five minutes (except for Ahmey *bawl*), and then we got both a downer-ending and a setting-up-for-the-sequel non-ending.

* Then there was Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which was also somewhat of a downer ending, which seemed a little out-of-place in a series all about kicking logic and sense and reason out the door.

* Then there was Code Geass R2, which I swore I would never watch any more of after episode 14. It was the end of a long day and I was morbidly curious as to how the whole thing ended. We saw the final culmination of Lelouch's plans, and, yes, it was somewhat of a downer as well.

* What's with Gurren Lagann occasionally deciding to get all logical and sensible and reasonable? (For example the whole deal with the moon.) It seems a little out-of-place.

* Saw a lot of Basilisk recently. I won't bother watching all of it. I know how it ends and the ending doesn't seem all that interesting, but some of the stuff in the middle is fun. Weirdly, I like Kasumi Gyoubu a lot. He has a nifty power, that actually lets him sneak around unseen (usually important for a ninja). It does means he goes around nekkid a lot, though.

* My travels and efforts in the World of Warcraft continue. I don't know if I mentioned that I got the recent expansion pack. Well I did and playing my level 70 druid was much more interesting again, because suddenly she had a whole lot of new things to do. Fairly recently, she made it to level 80, the new maximum level, and rapidly got boring again.

* I also have a Horde-sied Tauren druid, because, dammit, I'm going to level up a Horde character no matter what I do. He's at level 30, and has just got a riding Kodo. I was zooming around as a massive great Tauren on the back of this even-more-massive Kodo, singing and humming "The great Kodo" as I did it.

* The expansion pack for WoW mean that my travels and efforts in the City of Heroes has slowed almost to a standstill. None of my CoH characters seem even half as interesting or as capable as my druid characters in WoWarcraft.

* My nephew Finn is growing up (as babies tend to do). It's amazing to look at him these days and realise just how much he's grown in the past five months. Also, he's making great inroads into solid foods! He's so advanced!
Well, OK, it was really just a mouthful of potato salad.

* Also on the subject of Finn, I got him a little baby shirt for Christmas. It is a shirt for the modern day baby, and says, "iPood."

And, for something a bit more recent:

January 26 is Australia Day - it marks the anniversary of the First Fleet arriving here, and the start of English colonisation of Australia. It is a day of great celebrations, marked with large citizenship ceremonies, the naming of honourable Australians for the past year, and so on.

It is also the anniversary of white men arriving here, invading the lands of the Australian Aborigines, and shooting their world all to hell (sometimes literally). To the Aborigines, Janaury 26 is Invasion Day, and they get extremely upset by the fact that it is now the national day. Every year on January 26, there are protests and marches about Invasion Day and that the Aboriginal community doesn't support it.

This year, Australian of the Year for 2009, Mick Dodson, suggested that we, the nation, have a discussion about the suitability of January 26 being the date of Australia Day. Perhaps it should be moved to some other date? Less than 24 hours later, Prime Minister Kevin Rudd said, politely but firmly, "no."

Now, maybe he said more - he does like to talk, after all - but the news reports didn't show anything else. So I don't know why he said, "no."

If it's because we should *also* be remembering the Aborigines and what happened to them, and that we should be using the anniversary of Invasion Day to strengthen our resolve to do what we can to help and improve the Aboriginal condition (because it truly is a sad situation they're in) then I can understand why he said, "no."

If, though, he said, "no," for any other reason, then I'm quite upset with our Prime Minster.

The other guy, the Leader of the Opposition, was *worse*. He supported Australia Day staying as Jan 26, and waffled on about how January 26 was the day civilisation came to Australia. Um, foot in mouth, much? Compared to him, our Prime Minister looked like an absolute saint.

Saw a very funny description of what a real WoW fight... somewhere. In absence of a link I shall describe from memory.

Far from being a consummate fighter, capable of the most amazing combat feats, the warrior is getting hit a lot. He is perhaps parrying one hit in ten, is using his shield to hit the bad guy in the face far more than he's using it to block, and is calling the bad guy every bad name under the sun.

As he fights, the bad guy is hitting him and giving him absolutely terrible wounds that make the warrior look almost dead. The priest is off in the corner, keeping up an almost constant stream of panicked prayers to the Holy Light, and as a result these absolutely terrible wounds keep on rapidly closing.

Oh, and the warrior is hitting the bad guy, but to no discernible effect.

The rogue and catform druid appear as if from midair and ambush the bad guy from behind. The rogue plunges his poisoned daggers into the bad guy's kidneys and twists, to no discernible effect. Meanwhile, the catform druid is mangling and shredding and biting the bad guy's ankles, even though he should be going for the jugular. It is perhaps understandable that the druid's furious attack is having no discernible effect.

A bolt of fire hurtles from another corner of the room, followed by all manner of offesnive magic. Again, even though this is setting the bad guy ON FIRE, there is otherwise no discernible effect.

Suddenly, the bad guy suddenly just drops dead all of a sudden.

The rogue, druid, and mage start arguing about who hurt the bad guy the most. Meanwhile, the warrior is trying to tell them to not do so much damage, because he's running out of bad names to hurl at the bad guys. Except they're ignoring him. The warrior staggers over to the priest and they commiserate. "You look like hell," says the priest. "I'll heal you once I have a drink of melon juice."

I like the idea of Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, but after the first few episodes the execution is just so... typical. Episode 4 should have been a look at the result at school of Haruka's secret coming out.

Yet, such a thing is nowhere to be found. We get all the usual stories. Meet these wacky characters! The School Culture Festival! The Love Triangle! (Even though the male protagonist shows no interest in any of the other girls.) Silly misunderstandings! A threatening and overbearing yet ultimately silly and ineffectual father! Oh, and let's have a Cosplay Cafe at the School Culture Festival for the flimsiest of reasons!

Which leads ultimately to the real reason I wanted to make this post: Just once I would like to see a Cosplay Cafe at the School Culture Festival story where someone says, "OK, we'll put on one of these Cosplay Cafe things... just as long as for every girl that dresses up, one of the guys does as well."

I simply can't handle Sonic the Hedgehog, the 2006 XBox360 version. I've been stuck on the Crisis City stage (it's in THE FUTURE!) for the past two days, thanks to various things:
- Bad luck
- Overly touchy controls
- A camera that decides to randomly look behind me instead of in front of me
- Sonic not jumping when I press A
- Running straight off the freeway when the Goal Ring was just in sight
- Sonic deciding to jump into the lava instead of doing a Homing Attack on the enemy I was clearly pointing towards
- Sonic deciding to jump into the lava when all I was trying to do was speed up
- My reflexes not being what they used to be
- Me apparently deciding I don't like Sonic's high-speed style anymore

The way things were going, what with the touchy controls, my bad luck, and my lack of reflexes, if I'd actually made it to the Goal Ring I probably would have run straight past it and into the lava.

That was just this stage. A lot of other things had been annoying me, including the attempt at Grand Theft:Sonic, and the loading screens. Oh god the loading screens. There are SO MANY of them. (Including four in the Crisis City stage.)

I've had enough of this game.

---

I saw Episode 13 and part of Episode 14 of Code Geass R2 on the weekend. A Certain Something happens to a Certain Someone. Sadly, I'd been spoiled and knew the Certain Something was coming, and was pissed off about it. I wanted to see the episode to see how it happened, and how Lelouche and other characters reacted to it.

So the Certain Something happened. A reason was given for it. Lelouche reacted in one way, and then another later. Maybe the later raction was the more genuine one. Yeah well, who knows what Lelouche is ever really thinking.

He can go die in a fire. I've had enough of this show now.

I prefer to not be fired for blogging about my job, so I will make this post about me and merely say that changes instituted this week, combined with a few other factors, are kicking my ass.

Fun trivia note. I either:
- Have some form of Asperger's Syndrome
- Or am just resistant-to-change-and-process-oriented-and-bad-at-and-scared-of-communicating-and-have-exhibited-a-few-other-symptoms-of-Asperger's-over-my-lifetime

Seeing as the solution to either seems to be much the same, I've never bothered to get an official diagnosis. Plus, you know, the scared-of-communication bit. It makes talking to strange doctors difficult.

Anyway, that "resistant to change" bit is not helping this week.

---

I recently caught a few minutes of a show on ABC2 called The Hacker Half-Hour (I think that's what it was called, anyway). This week it was talking about the stuff we put online, and how it can jeopardise our future, and how our possible future employers might look at us. I'm looking at what I wrote above and am wondering if I should really post it. Is it a good idea to publicly announce that I am potentially screwed up in the head? But even if I am, I actually do pretty well at work. And if memory serves I think I've put much more incriminating stuff on the net already, and I've been using my real name on it since the year dot.

---

Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword on the DS is absolutely awesome. (See, this is a game that also requires high speed and reflexes, yet I do fine on this one.) The only flaw is that it goes on a little too long.

Then there is more awesomeness during the ending sequence, when you see Ryu without his ninja hood. And he's SMILING. This one bit helps show that he's more than just a super badass ninja, more than any other part in any other game he's in.

Well, more than any other part in any other game that I've seen. Those last three words count. I never saw much of the original NG games, or DoA1.

I went back and tried beating the Chapter 1 Boss. When you play through normally, you almost certainly die against this boss. He does a huge amount of damage to you, is one of the few enemies that damages you even if you block, and your hits against him do piddling damage. But that's okay, the boss is designed to kill you, and the game continues anyway when you eventually, inevitably, die.

If you beat the Chapter 1 Boss, you get a special bonus.

After trying to fight the Chapter 1 Boss (and failing) for something like three hours, I think I'll just have to do without the special bonus.

---

Saw the playable demo for Force Unleashed at an EB, and had a go. It was... OK, I guess, but it didn't feel all that awesome.

Now, the Jedi Knight games, *those* were awesome.

I'm finally catching up on The melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya, one of the hottest shows of 2006. Too bad it's currently 2008. Yes, I know I'm far, far behind the times.

Sadly, due to a couple of accidents with what *should* have been spoilers, and catching a scene of it at a Gamers store in Sendai in June 2007, I already know, roughly, what the deal with Haruhi is. So unfortunately, it will not be a big surprise when the series spells it out. It's an interesting twist, though! And at least I get to find out the details. I don't know the exact natures of Itsuki, Mikuru, and Yuki, for example, though I can guess. I don't know if there's anything up with Kyon. I'll post more musings about Kyon once I've finished watching the series.

The official DVD release we have available here in Australia has the episodes in chronological order, except for 'The Adventures of Mikuru Asahina', which comes before everything else. I am however watching the episodes in the original broadcast order.

Having watched the first four episodes (Adventures of Mikuru, Melancholy 1, Melancholy 2, Boredom), it seems obvious what the deal is already. There's just been so many clues, with Itsuki all but saying what the deal is in 'Boredom of Haruhi Suzumiya'. It's hard to say if it really is obvious, though, because I know how to interpret the clues.

Specific thoughts on the episodes, behind a spoiler cut even though it's a two year old show. )

I *finally* saw a demo of Rock Band yesterday. (It's not due out here in Australia for a while yet.) In short: The drums are interesting but difficult, the guitar feels strange, and nobody could work out how to bring the microphone into play.

Drums: Eesh. Once I figured out that the orange line meant the bass drum, I just got *worse*. It's like my left hand and foot were hardwired together and I couldn't separate them out. Drum I need to hit with my left hand? Hello, bass drum! Mind you, I never tried the drums on Easy. Perhaps I should have done that.

Guitar: I've heard about the strum bar being different, weird, and rubbery. It *still* didn't prepare me for just how different, weird, and rubbery it was. Maybe it emulates the feel of a guitar more realistically, but the GH3 controller just seems to handle much better.

-

As everyone knows, The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya was originally aired in non-chronological order. I'm gearing up to finally watch it, encouraged by an episode I saw of it at Supanova. Naturally, I assumed that the episode they showed was either the first episode chronologically, or the first episode of the original broadcast order.

(Man this gets confusing.)

However when I investigated the order of the episodes, I discovered that Supanova had showed "Live Alive", which is late in the order, either way.

Argh.

NOBODY SPOIL ANYTHING. I've been trying to avoid spoilers for this show for the past two years, not entirely successfully.

A theory on the US election later this year: There is evidence that the 2000 and 2004 presidential elections were victim to election fraud, and eventually stolen. So why will 2008 be any different?

Facing the practical inevitability that 2008's election will be screwed around with and eventually stolen by the Republicans, perhaps the Democrats have fielded candidates that would never win anyway.

I hope I'm wrong.

Appleseed Ex Machina: It looks amazing and starts out promising, but then it turns into a Typical Action Movie. The Big Action Movie Finish, in particular, really lets it down.

Resident Evil 4: Just about done with this. Have played the main game through twice, Assignment Ada and Separate Ways once, and The Mercenaries a lot. I've experimented with the Chicago Typewriter - it's a powerful gun alright, and fun for a few minutes, but it's too powerful, really. The Handcannon is probably worse. I'm shelving this for now.

Moero! Nekketsu Rhythm Damashii (Osu! Tatakae! Ouendan 2): Have picked this back up after a long hiatus, am powering through on hard mode, and getting close to the end. The "middle-aged fangirls" stage is kicking my ass though.

Once again I have been wildly inconsistent with Livejournal. However, this time it has been two weeks instead of eight months.

I never feel like I have much to post, though.

Well, there was Barack Obama's speech. OK, it was just a speech, and words are easier than actions, but, seriously, USA. Why isn't this man your President yet? :)

In other news, there's the 21 year old Ranma 1/2. I say 21 years old because the manga started in 1987. Even though it didn't finish until 1996, that still makes it 21 years old to me.

Anyway, despite the fact that I've written Ranma 1/2 fanfiction, and participated in GRiT (a Ranma 1/2 based improvisational community writing project RPG-type thing) for over ten years, I had never actually seen the Ranma 1/2 TV series.

Why yes, that paragraph *is* deliberately misrepresenting the truth! I actually am familiar with the series, seeing as I'd read all the manga, in both Japanese and English, and seen the movies and OVAs and six or so random episodes of the TV series, in both Japanese and English.

In any case, this is my roundabout way of getting to the point that I am now watching the Ranma 1/2 anime, at long last. I've seen the first two seasons so far. It's fun, but even in the first two seasons the filler elements are annoying. The later seasons, which infamously have lots more filler, are going to be even more annoying.

Current Music: Whenever, wherever
Yes, I have been away from LJ for a long while.

Yes, there is a reason for this.

No, it's not something I'm mentioning on LJ. Sorry!

Various quick thoughts from the past several weeks:

---

I finally saw Cars. Very fun, and I enjoyed it immensely.

---

I finally saw all of the anime series Zero no Tsukaima. While it has some interesting ideas, the execution is flawed, and the storytelling is bland and very predictable.

---

I really really didn't like Death Note. It is, basically, teenaged neo-gothic angst poetry - that then comes true! No wonder it's so popular.

Then, fairly recently, I skipped episodes 13-16 and saw episodes 17-20. From what I understand, Light and Misa gave away their Death Notes and lost all memories of them. Now Light is not the immensely bored student from the first episode, or the homicidal maniac he quickly became after getting the Death Note. Instead, he has a goal, is not bored, and is a very smart and nice guy. (He's almost *too* nice.)

It's nice to see that he's not completely a homicidal maniac jerk. As the saying goes, "absolute power corrupts absolutely" - and what is the Death Note if not absolute power?

I now find the series a bit more interesting. The problem is, I already know how it ends. I'm not sure if I'm interested enough to stick around and see all sorts of stupid things happen. )

---

About a month ago I finally got my druid in World of Warcraft to level 70. After a bit of desultory flailing about with my other characters, I found all the other classes a bit lacking when compared to the druid. After all, the druid can do it all (sort of). I am back to the druid and trying to get the 5200 gold I need for a very fast flying mount. I'm at 2800 gold and counting.

---

In less anime and game related news... My baby brother is getting married in less than two weeks. This is a very scary thought. He's six years and a half younger than I am, and getting married.

For the wedding, I pulled out my suit, which I haven't worn in ages. Thankfully, it meets my brother's approval. Also, it fits, thank god, though I could still stand to lose some weight.

Apr. 27th, 2006 @ 11:53 am Supanova report
So. Once again Supanvoa, the closest thing my city has to an anime convention (*), has come and gone. This was its fourth showing in Brisbane. And I went along, of course - how could I not? I've gone every year.

( (*) Slight lie. There is an anime convention starting up in Brisbane this year, after testing the waters last year with a 'mini-convention', but it hasn't had its first proper showing yet.)

Though this year, it seemed to sneak up on me. Even a week before, it didn't really register that, you know, Supanova was about to happen and I'd have to really hustle to get anything organised for it.

Opening Night

New this year was an 'Opening Night' on the Friday night before the main weekend convention. One of the two buildings was open, and there were some events and screenings. It seemed a bit disorganised though, and it started quite late. This was probably because they had... um... I can't remember who it was exactly. The Queensland minister for Information and Communication Technology, maybe? Something like that. Anyway, he came along and gave the opening speech.

On Opening Night, there was an 'anime quiz like thing'. Sean Schemmel and Mike McFarland (English dub actors for Son Goku and Master Roshi in DBZ) picked out teams and people answered three questions.

Right after that there was an Anime Auction for Charity. All proceeds from the auction went to Cyclone Larry relief efforts. Items that were auctioned included a bunch of autographed pencil boards, an autographed region 1 Hellsing DVD (which went for $220! Or was it $240?), and a Michelle figurine from R.O.D. the TV, autographed by Michelle's English voice actress. I saw that figurine and wanted it. The bidding eventually went over my budget, though, and I dropped out.

Tim, the auctioneer, was a very good auctioneer, in that he managed to get the price of items up and up. One very funny tactic he used went as follows: "Hello, you, the guy sitting next to the girl who just bid. Are you her boyfriend? Yes? Excellent. Why don't you bid for $5 extra and give this lovely item to her as a present?"

The guy did.

And then of course there was the Hellsing DVD that went for $240 or thereabouts. Two girls in the front got into a bidding war over it.

After that they showed a fan movie of Star Wars, which I quickly gave up on. I wandered over to the main theatre area.

I managed to catch most of a movie called Boss Beat, which was a short movie made of a 1950s to 1970s Australian superhero(ish) comic. I know nothing of the comic, and the movie was really cheesy, so it didn't make much of a favourable impression. Boss Beat, the title character, is a bit like Batman in that he doesn't seem to have any superpowers. He wears a mask, his hair is in a pompadour, and he's a bit thick. His enemy in the movie was a really cheesy communist villain called Red Menace. Understandable, given the original timeframe, but still...

Finally, I saw the first episode of Le Portraite de Petite Cosette, a gothic lolita anime. It's too weird for me, so I don't think I'll bother picking it up when it comes out here.

Anime Trivia

In 2004 and 2005 I entered the Anime Trivia competition. The team I'm in has a core group of four people, and we seem to do well enough - we even won in 2004. So it is to my eternal shame that the team's name is "Team Dirty Panty Thieves".

You may laugh and point now.

Anyway, this year the main Dirty Panty Thief was not at Supanova, so the team didn't happen. I rocked up to the Anime Trivia anyway, to see how many questions I could answer.

Which was when I discovered one of the announcer's good points. He encouraged everyone not in a team to get together and form teams. And so I found myself, along with three others, in 'Team We-Couldn't-Decide-On-A-Name (kimenai na no chiimu)'. Everyone was able to contribute, we got full points in Round Three (which was supposed to be the hardest round), and ended up coming third overall, which I found absolutely astonishing.

Which is where I have to mention one of the announcer's bad points. Or maybe it was just our team. Thanks to his confusing wording, and taking matters into his own hands (which he shouldn't have), there was a confused mix-up at the beginning of round two that had our team misunderstanding two of the questions. Thus we missed two questions, that, perhaps, we could have gotten.

Still, third is not bad, for a completely impromptu team.

Loot

Remember that Michelle figurine I missed getting at the auction? I found one shortly after doors opened on the Saturday, for half of what the auction one went for. I picked it up as soon as I saw it - no determined bidder was going to get this one over me.

There was also a Mai Shiranui figurine. H_H I kept on trying to talk myself out of it, but eventually I bought that one too.

My main acquisition, though, was all of Card Captor Sakura on DVD. The non-Nelvana, non-hacked, with-Japanese-subtitles version. Now I just need to find the time to watch it... (sigh)

A Yoko Ishida CD, a Maaya Sakamoto CD, and a couple of manga volumes completed the set.

Total cost: Too Much.

In the showbag I got a free 14-day trial version of World of Warcraft. I've always sworn to myself never ever to get onto a MMORPG, because my life and time would disappear in a flash. However, this time I've given in and I'm giving the trial a shot - after all, it's not costing anything, and it's only 14 days of my life that I'll lose.

After a few days, I think I'm finally starting to understand some of what makes WoW so addicting. Which is probably why I'll force myself to give it up in a week and a half when the trial ends.

Cosplay

I did not cosplay this time, though I did think briefly about getting Generic White Ninja out for one last time. The idea was, he'd get up on stage and say something like, "I represent all the generic ninjas that you kill by the hundreds in video games. I have come to this 'convention' of yours to show you that we do not suck. In my time here, I have learned an awesome technique that I shall now show you." At which point he does a Kamehameha. (*)

(*) There's an in-joke here. One of the events of Supanova is a Kamehameha contest. I am not kidding. People get up on stage, do a Kamehameha, and are judged on volume, length, and consistency. If they have a gimmick it can help but relying on just a gimmick means you eventually lose out. Usually a DBZ voice actor is part of the judging.

Eventually I decided against that.

Anyway, back to cosplay stuff. I think my personal highlight was when I saw a Malin cosplayer. (She's a character from the King of Fighters series.) Fighting game characters usually don't get many cosplayers at Supanova. There was also an old-school Kyo Kusanagi, a Ryuji Yamazaki, and a Rock Howard.

There was a group of Bleach cosplayers, but not the huge crowd of Bleach cosplayers I was expecting. Maybe around 10 or so.

You know what, I'll scan my photos of the cosplayers and put them online.

Maybe.

Summer Glau

Summer Glau, actress in Firefly and Serenity, was one of the celebrities there. She had two panels, but due to scheduling I was only able to get along to half of one of them. She didn't have anything special to say or present - she just started answering questions from the audience. Which, um, I can't remember anymore.

Actually, I tell a lie. I can remember one of the questions: "Now that River is not nuts, is that going to affect things in the future if any more of Firefly is made?" Which seemed more like a question for the writers, but Summer attempted to answer anyway, saying that River, despite not being nuts anymore, is still a little odd.

Thoughts on other events/contests

I didn't enter any other events or contests. I keep on meaning to enter the Anime Karaoke, but I'm terribly nervous, because I'm pretty sure my singing is absolutely crap and I haven't sung on stage for at least 15 years. One of these years... maybe...

The Anime Karaoke was fun as always, and was very notable in that it had Ryuji Yamazaki (insane killer extraordinaire) and Rock Howard (angsty emo teenager kid) singing an English Pokemon song. The girl who usually wins the Karaoke won again this year. She can sing *and* she knows how to put on a performance. Most other people just stand there nervously.

I barely even looked at the fanart wall. The lighting on it was a bit iffy, I thought. Also, it was behind some registration desks so you couldn't get up close. This made it very hard to see some of the pieces, especially the pencil ones. I didn't enter anything, due to Supanova sneaking up on me, as mentioned above.

In conclusion

I had fun. I'm just glad I'd applied for leave the following Monday, because I really needed the extra time to recover from the weekend. Oh, and to try out WoW. (Shifty eyes)

EDIT: The things I forgot

There was an awesome Dokuro-chan cosplayer. She even had the Excalibolg mace, and a halo. She was part of a larger Dokuro-chan group. They had a song-and-dance routine to the Dokuro-chan opening theme song when they got up on stage.

In the Madman panel, I found out they're releasing Ah! My Goddess TV! And Mai-Hime! Excellent. The really big news was that they're releasing Gundam Seed Destiny, Eureka 7, and Naruto. I don't know much about Eureka 7. Is it good?

Oct. 25th, 2005 @ 05:09 pm Just some quick random soundbites
- One of these days I should pile up all my unwatched anime, unplayed games, and unread books, look upon the stack set before me and despair. Despair, I tell you, DESPAIR! Oh, and take a picture of it, too, and put it up here.

- Am doggedly getting through Firefly, despite lots of other distractions. V. Good series.

- Saw that Star Trek DVDs were on clearance sale pretty much everywhere. Worried that I might miss my chance, I picked up seasons 4 - 7 of Star Trek Deep Space 9 (and might get season 3 as well), which I've been meaning to get for a few years. Now I just need a few months of spare time. (They were almost 66% off!)

- Not bothering with any other Star Trek DVDs. I am not made of money, I do not have the time, I watched most of TNG back in the day, and I'm not that interested in catching up on Voyager or the original series.

- Have discovered to my chagrin that the shoes I use for jogging are hell on my feet. Thankfully I did not have much actual use for my toenails, which seem to be in the process of falling off. Ow. Will need to use other shoes, and have made decent running shoes a priority.

- Have finally seen Disney's Mulan, after seven or so years of wondering what it was like. Enjoyed film v. much.

- Have also finally started on Last Exile. Wanting to see more.

- The DnD game that was supposed to happen on the weekend didn't. Email was sent around saying it was off, but by mistake it went only to the old group and not to me. Character I'll be using is Landerson Z. K. Miller, a melee combat / mage type character, or 'spellsword'. Hopefully the game will be back on this weekend.

- The ADSL modem at home is acting very oddly. It seems to randomly switch between full functionality and trying to line sync. Giving the PC an extended rest.

As I may or may not have mentioned here (I can't remember), I have become quite a Bleach fanboy lately. There's just something about it. Alright, quite a few things:

1) There's some great treatment of death and passing on in the early episodes.

2) In the early episodes, there's at least one confrontation that is not resolved with violence, and another confrontation that does not end with Ichigo (the main character) defeating the enemy (Grand Fisher). Instead, it ends in a draw.

3) A great dynamic between Ichigo and Rukia (one of the main female leads).

4) Rukia's adorably crappy drawings. ^_^

5) Rukia herself. She's tough, no-nonsense, and quite unusually, there is little-to-no hint of any romance between her and Ichigo.

6) The fact that all the action is not involving regular people at all. They can't even see what's happening, and it doesn't even concern them.

7) Even after the Soul Society arc begins, and the format becomes much more typically shounen action - Ichigo fighting increasingly tougher opponents, and powering up in between each fight - it's different. While the end effect is Ichigo powering up, the explanation for it is interesting - Ichigo has always had this monstrous power, and is learning how to unlock all the barriers he's instinctively put on it. It's not just 'level up and get 40 extra reiatsu power points.'

8) And some of the characters introduced during the Soul Society arc are just damn cool.

Actually, I could keep on going, but I'll stop there. No, wait, I need to make one more:

9) Ichigo's friends and allies are *not* completely useless, and aren't just cheerleaders.

Problem was, I kept on accidentally running into spoilers. I finally decided to put a stop to that, and went and caught up on the manga. Hah! It'll be hard for me to get spoiled now!

10) The way the Soul Society arc resolves is... satisfyingly different. If only a litle.

Ironically, cut for (very mild) spoilers. )

So, time for another long-winded post of random tidbits.

Had a weird dream last night. I somehow travelled thirty or so years into THE FUTURE. In this future, the world was in the last stages of everything - people, countries, companies, etc. - becoming part of one great big multinational corporation. In the role of an observer, I saw their shock troops move into another company's building, and the CEO being presented with an ultimatum at gunpoint: "Join us or become irrelevant." Or something like that.

It then rapidly shifted tracks, and I was meeting the future selves of people I knew from the present. In a weird twist, someone else who had travelled into the future with me met his future self, but there was no future me for me to meet. Before the dream could explore the meaning of this scary development, I woke up.

Somewhere during all this, someone jabbed his finger at a spinning fan and got the tip of it sliced off. (Eww!) As I rushed over to him, trying to remember first aid, he told me to go get the First Aid kit. I did, he picked out some sort of super-bandage, and it somehow regenerated the tip of his finger. I was all like O_O and such.

---

Extremely US-centric point: You know Michael Brown? He was that fellow who recently resigned from the top job in FEMA because he was supposed to handle the federal emergency response to Hurrican Katrina and did a very poor job of it. I understand he's been rehired by FEMA. Not only has he been rehired, he's been rehired as a consultant, looking into what wrong with the Hurricane Katrina response.

This makes no sense. Par for the course for the current US Administration.

I have always thought that perhaps I might one day visit the USA. Right now, though, I am thinking that it would be extremely advisable for me to stay the hell away from the country. Yes, even though I'm a white male of reasonable means and no obvious affiliations to the Middle East. (*)

Oh, and more US news:

Bush wants to let the military enforce laws, or something.

Dear USians, I would like to politely tell you that your country seems to be extremely fscked of late, what with all the cronyism, incompetence, and avoidance of responsibility. It would be nice if it all changed in the wake of the 2008 elections, but that's 3 years away, and by that time Dubya may have worked out a way to declare himself Dictator-For-Life.

(*) Come to think of it, perhaps they'd think my Scottish name is Irish, and lock me up as a suspected Northern Ireland terrorist. Stranger things have happened, I'm sure.

---

It seems, though, that my own country is also rather fscked. I am hardly following Australian news (grar, I say, GRAR!, or perhaps just "whoops") but even I noticed the following: It seems that those damnable anti-terror laws have passed. One of the most distressing items is the ability for terror suspects to be detained for 14 days without charge. Oh, and in secret, too, it seems. I wonder who'll be targeted as terror suspects first? People of obvious Middle-Eastern descent, perhaps?

I tell you, this general Western anti-terrorist hysteria and Dubya's "War on terra" has a lot to answer for.

---

In a truly 'ARGH!' moment, I have misplaced the piece of paper on which I put the account name and password for one of my banking accounts. I thought it was in one place, I went to get it, and it was not there.

I know I've seen the piece of paper around, now, I just have to re-find the blasted thing. This is going to be harder than it sounds, for I will have to sort through masses of paper.

I just hope that if I wrote them down in pencil, that they haven't faded yet... :/

Fsck fsck fsck.

---

Incidentally, I seem to have become rather enamoured of the word 'fsck' of late. ^_^;

In other State of the Steven news, I am continuing to chip away at my unwatched anime pile. It is still, as ever, enormous. I've got *seven* box-sets to get through. (*) Why do I have so many, you might ask. The answer is that typically I got the boxsets because I wanted to see the series, just not necessarily right now, and that I should get them before they were no longer available. This has actually proved to pan out: Quite a few of the boxsets I got seem to no longer be available. Not a surprise, considering at least one of them is over two years old. Or maybe three years old, even.

So! I have returned to one of the box-sets - in fact, one of the earliest I ever got - Samurai Girl: Real Bout High School. Typically of a GONZO production, it looks nice but is a little dodgy, story-wise. One particular WTF moment was in... um... episode 6, I think it was, when the heroes were fighting the villains, they were all pulled into an alternate world, and suddenly they had joined together and were all fighting their common enemy. As you perhaps should do in such a case, but there were no scenes of them deciding to work together, it just suddenly happened. Meh. In any case, I got this series, I'm now halfway through, and I'm going to damn well finish watching it.

Something else of GONZO's I have seen recently is Chrono Crusade DVD volume 6. The bit at the end (Black Rosette) was a huge WTF moment for me, and not in a good way. If it wasn't so close to the end already, I'd not bother watching this series anymore, and just stick with the manga, which I hear is much better.

Really, it's because of things like this that make me extremely leery of picking up Last Exile. Because that's done by GONZO as well. I'm always hearing that Last Exile is good, but every time I hear GONZO's name I cringe just a little.

(*) And that's just DVDs! I've got a huge number of downloaded anime episodes to get through as well... le argh.

Now for some amazing GRIT news! After many years of talking about it, we're finally up to the long-awaited Hiatus.

For those who don't know what I'm talking about, GRIT is sort of this improvisational-writing/role-playing game type thing loosely based on the Ranma 1/2 universe, and has been going since early 1996. In that time, a lot of dead weight and continuity has built up, making things rather difficult, as you might imagine. Also, many of the primary players have moved on, and now have more pressing concerns on their time. Because of all this, GRIT has been very stagnant and slow for the past few years.

To fix these problems, the Hiatus is a year of game-time, twinkling by in a flash. During this year, characters will be retired, things will change, and plot threads will be largely tied up. Theoretically, this will allow things to start all over again, with a mostly clean slate.

I'm not sure how well this will work, though. Some of the old threads and characters were so intricately tied into things that we won't be able to ignore them. (For example, the character Jo, who is close to being the main character of GRIT.) So it's not as clean a slate as I would like.

Not to say I think the Hiatus isn't a good idea, it is, but I'm worried that it might not work.

Oh well, we'll see how things play out.

Just some notes, while I'm thinking of them:

* I find myself much less interested in videogames, all of a sudden. I don't really know what happened - I took some time off from games to marathon my way through my stack of unwatched anime, and my interest in games dropped a lot and never really came back.

* Have been watching a lot more anime lately, in an attempt to get through my stack of unwatched episodes. I've made a fair dent in them. Chief amongst my anime-watchings lately has been Bleach - I went from episode 21 to 48 in about a week. I'm really enjoying the series so far. Though, even with the conspiracy plot starting to really kick in, I kind of miss the 'real world' story arc at the beginning of the series.

* I made the mistake of looking at a Naruto forum recently. Not only was that a bad move in itself, it was made worse by the recently-aired premiere of the US version of Naruto. The sheer amount of bile that was being spewed, merely because their favourite show was now in English and pronunciations were, quite sensibly, Anglicised, was flabbergasting. And I kept on reading. I think I took a permanent -2 penalty to Intelligence.

* On that note, I have finally fully and properly twigged to the fact that pronouncing Japanese words in a Japanese way in the middle of an English sentence sounds REALLY WEIRD. Now, if only your typical anime dub-hater would catch on to that, too.

* I won at DDR, so to speak. I finally passed Sakura on Heavy Mode, which was my last main goal for the game. Said goals were to get reasonably good at Heavy Mode, and to pass So Deep, Bag, and Sakura on Heavy. Now that they're done, shall I continue to play? Probably, but probably not as much, either.

* Neo-Geo Battle Colosseum is finally out here. It's kind of fun, but see my first note. I just don't find myself getting as interested in it as I have for previous SNK fight games.

Finally finished watching all my unwatched DVDs last night!

Well, ok, not quite true. I have a whole lot of boxsets that I haven't even started on (I think there's at least six, maybe seven) *and* I'm planning on getting another boxset (Angelic Layer) next week. But, by finishing Chrono Crusade volume 4, I finally get through all my single DVDs! Yayness. To celebrate, I did absolutely nothing.

Chrono Crusade is alright, though I've heard that the manga is much better and the anime messes with the manga's storyline significantly. I've stopped reading the manga for the moment, so that it doesn't colour my opinion of the anime too much. I'll read it once the anime's done.

Inspired by this entry of [info]vidstudent's, I decided to get out Ninja Gaiden and try it on Hard mode. For those unfamiliar with the game, it is infamous for being INSANELY HARD. Even on Normal mode it's difficult, and until you get the hang of it you're taking damage up the wazoo, using all your health potions and your ressurection item, and dying on the first boss anyway.

Then once you get the hang of what you're doing, you still have trouble with the first boss.

And all *that* is just on Normal. On Hard mode, it promised to be even worse. But I was not deterred. Bravely, I sallied forth and started the game on Hard mode.

To my amazement, several days later I was still playing, and on chapter 10. I thought for sure I was going to falter on chapter 9, wherein you have to take on two tanks and then a helicopter - yes, a frigging ASSAULT HELICOPTER, that shoots missiles at you and drops bombs on you - with your bow and arrows. These are all in a row, with no chance to restock on potions.

But as bad as those battles were, I managed to get through them. Somehow.

Then I found I'd forgotten about the *next* major battle in chapter 9, which has NINE soldiers, all with rocket launchers, all far away and difficult to aim at, and all shooting at you. Shoot one, and a replacement appears. You're not even supposed to shoot them. They're just a distraction. Instead, you have to stop, stand still, and carefully aim and shoot at other things. While you are standing still, the soldiers are still shooting rockets at you.

I managed to get through that battle. Somehow.

I haven't played since, because Ninja Gaiden Black is coming later this year, and I don't want to get burned out. This is silly reasoning, I know. I'll probably pick the game up again and continue my efforts to defeat Hard mode.

I don't think I'll try Very Hard, though. I tried that once. The chapter 3 boss absolutely owned me. He was too insanely hard, even for me, and normally I find him very easy to get past. I gave up after that.

Ninja Gaiden Black will apparently have an even harder difficulty setting, called "Master Ninja". I'll try it, of course, but probably not for long.

(Well, it actually wasn't 4 years long, it just reads better that way...)

So. The details of the boring 4 year long Leisure Suit Larry-related quest are behind this LJ-cut. )

Have very recently got myself an MP3 player. Part of the reason why was because a coworker got one himself, which had a 512 MB size and cost $99. Now, I've been vaguely interested in getting an MP3 player of some sort for a while, and this sounded like quite a good price. Low enough, even, to get an MP3 player just to try it out and see if it's my type of thing.

So, now quite interested, I hauled over to the shop, and found that the $99 512 MB players had all sold out. Well bugger. However, I found a $149 512 MB player, and after a bit of window shopping decided this was the best I could get. So I did.

It's not as small as some, but still small, light, and much better than lugging a Walkman or Discman around. It is, as the l33t kids say, teh nifty.

---

The fact that it is now June 2005 is driving home some really aggravating points about just how lazy and slack I am:

- I have email from way back that I still haven't answered. I may have had email troubles, but they have been (mostly) sorted out for almost a month. Why have I not answered anything yet?

- June 2003 was when I tried writing 'Chapters Inna Hour' for Rogue Demon Thiesra, and petered out after only five chapters. I keep on wanting to resurrect this thing and finish it.

- It's been a year since a friend of mine came up to Brisbane. I saw him again in October when I went down to Sydney. There has been precious little contact since then. This is probably all my fault.

---

In further news of just how slack I am, I now have a tremendous number of unwatched anime DVDs. The sheer number of them is extremely daunting and overwhelming, and I wonder how I'll ever get through them all.

The obvious answer is "once at a time", so why I am still having trouble? Argh.

It's one of the few giant robot anime series I can actually get into. It feels sort of like Evangelion, but done in a better way. Plus, it has singing robots. Singing robots are a definite plus.

If you ask me, Appleseed, the movie, fails.

Why it fails (Spoiler-free). )
